Housing and Homeless Councils

Cedar Valley Friends of the Family began the Northeast Iowa Housing and Homeless Alliance in 2007.  This group functions as the local Continuum of Care and was made up of service organizations, churches, elected officials, and private citizens.  The Alliance discussed homeless programming, housing issues, and how they can develop a system of deliver that helps serve homeless families and individuals better.  Many organizations have participated in the Alliance including USDA Rural Development, Helping Services, Northeast Iowa Community Action, and Cedar Valley Friends of the Family.  Since that time this alliance has been divided up into 3 different councils.

Buchanan County Homeless Council:

The Buchanan County Homeless Council was formed in the late 1980′s.  The Council was developed to work on homeless issues in Buchanan County. The Council helped bring a Salvation Army chapter and was instrumental in establishing Buchanan County’s Habitat for Humanity charter.  Our mission statement is “The Homeless Council is a group of concerned organizations and citizens who seek to identify, address, and advocate for the needs of people living in homeless situations in Buchanan County.”

The council meets at 12PM (noon) on the 1st Monday every month.  Lunch is provided.  We meet at St. James Episcopal Church, 202 2nd St. NE in Independence.

Cedar Valley Homeless Coalition:

The Cedar Valley Homeless Coalition covers the four counties of Bremer, Butler, Chickasaw, and Fayette Counties. This coalition began meeting in October 2012. We are working towards developing a coordinated intake system for the 4 counties and identifying avaialble resources for individuals and families struggling with homelessness.

We meet the 3rd Tuesday of every month at 9AM at Cedar Valley Friends of the Family administrative offices.

Northeast Iowa Housing and Homeless Alliance:

The Northeast Iowa Housing and Homeless Alliance covers the four counties in Northeast Iowa. Those counties are Allamakee, Clayton, Howard, and Winneshiek. The Alliance began meeting again in January 2013.  We are taking a look at the need in the 4 counties and what resources are available.  We will also be working towards determining how to best help individuals and families struggling with homelessness in our 4 counties.
